A Passion For Milk Bottles
Page 2

Amongst the most favourite of my bottles are two with war time slogans and two with Disney cartoons and captions. I also treasure my Thatcher Milk Protector bottle, the most famous of the first milk bottles to be used in the U.S., complete with glass stopper and superb embossing of a Quaker farmer sat milking a cow.

The highlight of my collecting years to date was in 1995 when I held an exhibition which I called 'Melksham Milk & Milk Bottles' at the local library of my home town of Melksham in Wiltshire. Melksham is synonymous with the milk trade. It was where United Dairies started, the company that in the 1950's joined forces with the Guildford based company, Cow and Gate, to form Unigate. Unigate also operated one of the south-west's largest milk collecting depots here and the Co-op also operated a creamery. And to cap all of this, so to speak, the Anglo-Saxon translation of the name Melksham is milk place.

Since having moved to Birmingham ten years ago, fate has played an interesting hand as the city is home to the worlds largest collection of restored electric milk floats, exhibited at the Midland Museum of Transport at Wythall, Birmingham. I have become good friends with the museum curator with whom I am constantly exchanging information. Click here for a close-up of this bottle.
